Study: Coal-Based CO2 Could Boost US Oil Production by 3.5 MMbpd

Rig Zone -- A new study found that CO2 capture and utilization at existing and new coal-fired power plants and coal-to-liquids facilities could boost U.S. oil production by more than 3.5 million barrels per day for more than 40 years.

The study, prepared for U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu by the National Coal Council, features input from 60 energy experts in coordination with the National Petroleum Council. The focus is enhanced oil recovery, or EOR, which has increased U.S. oil production for almost half a century, the NCC said.

"It's time to think of CO2 as a valuable commodity," study chairman Richard Bajura said. "Advanced coal technology is key to affordably realizing deep reductions in emissions. The U.S. uses more coal than any nation except China, and potential production of U.S. oil

exploration of alternatives is a good thing, as long as it's not a total waste of taxpayers' money.

Very interesting except our present administration has written off coal which would of course provide thousands of jobs.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu does not want to see anything that doesn't make the US look like Europe.

This seems like a great way to have our cake and eat it too. There are many coal burning electric power plants in the US. They are facing the higher costs and complexity of installing special equipment to capture the CO2 output if they continue to use coal, or the higher costs of converting to natural gas to generate electricity.

Now the oil companies come along and want to buy that CO2 which they need, to use in extracting more oil from the wells. As a side benefit, the CO2 won't be released into the atmosphere, instead it will remain down in the empty oil wells after the oil is removed. Another benefit is that the CO2 can be sent to any oil wells where needed by the same pipelines crisscrossing the country that now carry oil and natural gas.

The coal burning electric generators make money by selling something they would need to dispose of anyway, and the oil companies get the CO2 they need for less money than if they make CO2 from processed natural gas. Some of the CO2 gets stored in empty wells where it can't hurt the environment. I don't see a problem, unless the government gets involved and messes it up somehow.

Wikipedia has a decent article on Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) which explains the use of CO2 for oil extraction.

So why aren't we doing this? Because it might involve spending money? That's not spending money at the Pentagon? The the chicken hawks don't want to spend any money on anything that's not built in their district and they don't want to spend any money on anything else.
