More Proof Diesel Exhaust Fumes do Cause Cancer

Oilprice.com -- The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has confirmed that fumes from dirty diesel engines causes cancer. The new report adds to a mountain of studies, reports, and data linking diesel fumes to a wide range of health problems including, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and heart disease; and now places diesel exhaust fumes in the same cancer risk category as asbestos and arsenic.
Luckily it is quite simple to solve the diesel pollution problem. Reducing sulphur levels in diesel fuel allows the engines to take advantage of effective filtration technologies only available to ultra-low sulphur fuels. This dramatically reduces the pollution levels of the exhaust fumes. Low sulphur diesel is now standard in the US and modern diesel engines are 90 percent cleaner than engines sold..

DanMatz: I agree. Let's stop smoking first b/c that's much more carcinogenic. Then, let's look at all the crap that is going into our foods.

Lastly, if we didn't require massive quantities of flowers in December or February, or cherries and strawberries for Christmas, we could do w/out a lot of the diesel transportation.

DerHahn, it's a propaganda piece by oilprice.com. Are you surprised it's not telling the facts about modern diesel engines?

"However other parts of the world are not as lucky as the US, and must make do with ancient, highly polluting diesel engines. Sulphur levels in China, India, and Mexico are more than 30 times higher than in the US, and in poorer countries throughout Africa, Asia, and Latin America, sulphur levels can be 300 times higher."

Another reason to be glad to be in the US of A...

should have included "old diesel engines cause cancer" rather than something people see without reading and then think it means all diesels

Many things cause cancer, diesel exhaust is one of them. Breathe clean air and do not stick your nose in diesel exhaust fumes. Duh!
More low sulfur vehicle fuels needed (Bio diesel has no sulfur, it's made from WVO - waste vegetable oil!), do not smoke cancer sticks, avoid asbestos dust, stay away from arsenic, do not get chemical liquids on your skin or breathe chemical fumes or gasses. There are many other possible man made cancer sources, try to stay away from all of them. The body given to you at birth may have some resistance to cancer, some people are exposed to cancer causing sources all their lives and never get cancer. Other people get cancer at the least exposure – whether natural or man made.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe and reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

So do a number of things, and we will probably find out even more things we intentionally consume are carcinogens. Don't suck on tailpipes.

And what's the point? We have factories and industry. We have cars and cigarettes. We have additives to our food and water. And NOW they tell me that diesel fumes are harmful as well? Who knew?

OK......everybody stop breathing. "WHAT?" I think it's a little bit too late now. What should we do with all of the diesel that we have on hand? Drink it? I think this particular research should have been done a long time ago, know what I mean?

There are people who plain do not like any kind of energy. I don't see any of these environmentalists volunteering to give up gasoline or electricity.

Garbage! You are looking at diesels from 20 years ago - NOT the current diesels being produced.

Diesel fuel for off-road use (farming, construction, etc) still contains fairly high levels of sulfur so there is still a lot of diesel pollution around. At least you are not breathing as much of it on the highways now.
