I agree that it did not help the last time and the oil industry is very unstable at this time. I also admit that the current prices are hitting the pocket pretty hard. A full size vehicle is nice but the economy size are a blessing

No, we need to support public transportation, alternative energies, and physical exercise. We need to shrink the suburbs and bring back farm land. Grow the city centers for more efficient resource utilization.
Tapping into the reserves won't make us oil independent for long.

Absolutely not! That needs to be preserved for true emergencies, like foreign embargos, military use, or similar national security needs.
"but this continued blaming Obama for everything under the sun is getting really sad. President's have little to do with gas prices..." But then you go on to bash Bush. Give me a break.
On the other hand, our Chevy Volt lifetime avareage is currently 190 MPG. So, why is it our Republican "leadership" keeps bashing the Volt as an O'Bama program? Idiots.

No, we should rely less on oil, and higher prices are the only way to encourage less reliance on foreign oil and non-renewable sources of fuel.

No a release would not come close to having a significant enough impact to do it. Its a risk reward thing and the risk being that specs will drive the price up based on the fact the the US is down in its supply. Until speculation is drivin from the market get use to high prices.

RecountFL,
I thought you said that Bush was a fool when he released some of the SPR.
Now you think Obama is brilliant for doing the same thing?

28% . Yes 19% . No, the SPR is for emergencies only 22% . No, oil prices are determined by speculators 10% . No, it won’t help; oil is a global commodity 2% .. No, government should not interfere with industry 9% .. No, there was little relief the last time we did i 2% .. No, other reason 5% . I do not know enough about this issue Total votes: 34648
What is it that 28% (9701 people) believe will happen? Don't they pay attention to history? It has never had any effect (or an effect that lasted more than a week) It certainly has never effected the price of gas.
What are those 28% thinking? Would someone please tell me?

"Does anyone else see the Presidents error? He says more drilling will not get us out of this problem, but wants to release oil from the SPR? "
No, but I see your error. You are comparing opening up more areas for drilling to releasing oil from the reserve. One is immediate and the other a a slow, long process which makes no immediate impact. I know you think it's cool to bash the president like they do on Fox News, but this continued blaming Obama for everything under the sun is getting really sad. President's have little to do with gas prices and if you really want to blame a president, how about Bush that brought you from $1 gas to $4 gas. Oil prices are still lower than the $147/bbl price under the Bush administration. Georgy has been the most incompetent president in recent times as the country sunk into the worst recession since the Great Depression. Save your Carter/Obama hating when a guy with an 'R' next to his name with an 'R' majority Congress 3/4 of the time was in office at the time when all of our current economic problems started.

Until I see lines of cars lining up to fill-up for gas like I did 30 years ago, there is no need to touch the SPR. There is a whole bunch of gasoline. It is pure speculation now and they will be left holding the bag soon. Now lets get into natural gas.....$1.85 a gallon and very very clean fuel..........

Dear Obama, the most incompetent president since Jimmy Carter! Don't mess with the Strategic Reserve! The Strategic Reserve is about National Security, not your political ambition to get reelected! Americans realize that. You, however, not being an American, would not understand that!

The "real" answer is no. As someone pointed out earlier, we need a more permanent fix. When I was younger I dug gas-guzzling V8 muscle cars (once owned a Z28 Camaro w/350 V8 small block). In this day and age, that's just not too practical. People really should try to get away from the habit of driving huge and/or big-motored vehicles for everyday use (excluding commercial use/business) and driving more fuel efficient (or alternate fuel-type) vehicles. Europeans are already adapting this "think small" attitude as gas is about $9.00/gal over there. Just my $0.02 USD worth.

No, oil prices are determined by speculators and there was little relief the last time we did it. Wall street is destroying the world economy.

First of all, this subject should not even be up for discussion. But since it is Ill add my 2 cents about how I honestly feel about it.When the faux 'gas shortage' came in the seventies, it nearly shocked this nation to the point of a transportation shutdown. Gas was about 20 cents a gall on life was good.
The price of gas tripled in six months to 65 cents a gallon, the country was in a panic (as today) and people everywhere were talking about solar, wind, ocean energy and noone really did a damn thing.
I government succumb to the middle east and decided to remain a fuel hostage (as today).
An noone even suggested converting the whole country to natural gas. They were to busy redesigning vehicle, making them smaller and even went as far as dropping the speed limit to 55.
So as I look back now, what did our government do for the American people the last forty years? My only conclusion is not one damn thing.
We are sitting on 1255 trillion cubic feet of natural gas which is the cleanest energy source on the planet. If the conversion would have happened forty years ago, we would now be totally converted, really wouldnt have to worry about air pollution and could sit back and watch all the rest of the world pollute themselves to death and drink up on the nasty ass oil.
And back to oil. Have you ever heard of anyone suggesting build new refineries? I know I havent. So if you dont have refining capacity what difference does it make?
noone will ever convince me that if you can put a man on the moon, (which personally I think did happen), that you cannot build a car that gets at least 100 miles per gallon. It can be done, but noone does it.
So bottom line is, well, here we are again still after 40 years of nothing, no progress, still hostages, and sitting back waiting for 'things to get better.'
And.... I love the comments that the reserve is for 'emergencies'. Well that doesnt matter either when all of your military is overseas fighting when they should be here defending our borders, airports and seaports.
But if they do happen to make reserves available, I hope you enjoy your 3 gallon when you fill up.
You can then apply that 'savings' to your hamburger meat.
Like great grandpa said. ''You never buy water from your neighbor (or enemies) when you have the well.''

Keep the government out of industry, it didn't help last time. Spr is for military use in case of emergencies. If we didn't export so much prices would drop.

No, tapping into the strategic reserves would do nothing. There's no gas shortage and in fact we are the number one exporting nation of gasoline. We have more wells than the rest of the world combined. Remove Wall Street speculators and the price will drop $0.56/gallon of gas.

Get Wall Street and speculators out of it and the price will come down. Have minimum government interference so they cant pass unneeded taxes and fees. Find multiple renewable sources that are not connected to our food chain or our food chains food chain. When it is connected to the food chain in any way it also drives up the price of food.
