Texas says: "Step on the gas pedal!'

GasBuddy Blog -- Just about any place where people travel in cars the government tells us to slow down, drive safely and you'll conserve gasoline too. But that's not the deal in Texas.

The Lone Star State says "Step on it!" ...And that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Two Central Texas highways will see speed limit increases after the Texas Transportation Commission approved 80 mph designations for 54 miles of roadway in the Austin area. The increased speed limits were approved for segments of SH 130 from Georgetown to Mustang Ridge and SH 45SE from Mustang Ridge to I-35 in Travis County.

The 82nd Texas legislature passed and Texas Governor Rick Perry signed HB 1201 which allows the Texas Dept. of Transportation (TxDOT) to establish...

Newer vehicles have better stearing, tires and breaking systems and are much safer to operate at high sppeds that cars used to be when the speed limits were set. Speed limits should rise where it is safe to do so.

Even at 80 mph it still takes 2 days to cross the state from
Ft Bliss/El Paso to the LA state line and Barksdale AFB.

hmm, a lot of tires are only speed rated to 80mph, i guess they're trying to get rid of some excess population, or at least those with cheaper tires.

Many western states have wide open spaces with roads that go on and on and on. Increase the speed limit where higher speeds will not cause a problem with other vehicles, the road is designed for high speeds or the nearby population is Not a risk. Make sure the driver has full control of the vehicle and their 'undivided attention' otherwise things can go wrong very quickly.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible!
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

Having driven across Texas at least 4 times in the last 15 years I can attest how big it is! One 1-10 in West Texas 80 mph may not be excessive except for fuel consumption. Have you ever been passed by a an oversized pickup truck pulling a horse trailer on I-10 while your speedometer was in the neighborhood of 85?? What kind of mileage was he getting? Wonder how long it would take him to stop?? The mind boggles at these kinds of thoughts.

They are doing those speeds on the 405 through Orange County. You don't need to get out in the desert to see that.

Speed limits should take into account traffic, road conditions and any pedestrian/residential issues. In wide open areas let it rip, go Texas.

Build cars that save gas, drive less, drive slowly, these seem to be the bane of the Texa agenda.
If this recommendent goes through it flies in the wind of what the rest of societies hard work for the last years!
It will mean that I will never drive in that styat as I was planning.
I have seen what an accident did in Germany!

Not real safe but some areas are long and flat and level. People might fall asleep whether it's 65, 75 or 85. Most police won't pull them over for speeds up to 94 so, that could be really unsafe.

At these speeds there will be more traffic deaths and more Darwin award candidates. That's okay. There are too many people in this country and this world anyway.

"When they raise the limit to 80 mph, people will be driving 90 to 95 mph."

That's up to local law enforcement. What threshhold over the speed limit will they allow above the speed limit before issuing speeding tickets?
