This topic is for posting where the cops are currently writing speeding tickets. They tend to move around, so we may be able to follow them around somewhat with this. Mention the equipment that they use if you can tell.

I-294 North of O'Hare is rather busy with state troopers today.

The state police seem to be keeping busy on I-294 up north whre the construction is done. That many open lanes is tempting...

The tri-state where the construction is finishing up is covered with state police. I think that they are taking advantage of the fact that when a road that has been 2-3 lanes of constuction road is now 5 lanes of new roadway, people tend to go fast just because they finally can.

been seeing alot of squads on finley between ogden and butterfield lately
also, lombard is really hitting the pads as per my earlier post, plus they've been sitting in the median on highland, between 22 and roosevelt

the pd was really working the intersection of meyers road and roosevelt road this afternoon. 4-5 squads, continually pulling people over, including 1 tow truck. they've done it before for several days straight

Motorcyclist charged with 112 mph in a 45-mph zone

Heck, if he was going that fast, why did he stop?

This morning on IL-83 just south of I-290 there were 5 police cars in the median checking speeds. There was another one further south writing a ticket.

What REALLY bothers me is Civil Forfeiture. It's wildly unconstitutional, and essentially turns the police into thieves.

After all, solving crime doesn't get new police cars or raises, but fines do. In fact, lowering crime hurts their budget.

On the way to work this morning I saw a Wooddale cop with his radar pointed at the bridge construction area on Thorndale at Salt Creek. Also, I saw both a state trooper and a Cook County Sheriff with cars pulled over by Euclid on NB IL-53.

Last night on I-290 SB just south of Higgins there was a state trooper at 7 PM with a laser unit. When my radar detector went off, I hesitated because I hadn't heard that sound before. That won't happen again.

This morning at IL-53 and Dundee Road there wasn't either an Illinois state trooper or a Cook county sheriff. There was a Palatine cop. Haven't seen a local cop there before. I'm not even sure that's Palatine.

I just checked and it's NOT Palatine, it's Arlington Heights.

That cop at IL-53 and Dundee Road hasn't been there for a while, but my radar detector kept going off. Today I saw him on the other side where you can't see him unless you turn around and look when you are under the overpass. It's a really good hiding place.

I saw a clever cop in Kildeer that used the decorative brick display at the entrance to a housing area as cover. There was a hole in the middle that he pointed the radar gun through.

At 7 AM there was a DuPage Sheriff writing up someone on I-290 inbound at IL-83. They were on the on ramp, so the incident may have occurred on NB IL-83, though the Elmhurst Police normally watch that area on NB IL-83 between North Avenue and I-290. It's a favorite for them, probably because it "feels" like interstate, but there's a 45 speed limit.

Yesterday the Orland P.D. had their plain white Ford SUV parked along 153rd Street in the driveway where Andrew Corp. used to be. Looked like he was targeting westbound cars on 153rd.

This morning on IL-53 SB there were two state troopers in SUVs with semis pulled over just north of Thorndale, and another one north of Rand Road. Are they using wolf packs again? There was also a Cook County Sheriff on NB IL-53 just north of Dundee.

If Forest Park police have that much time on their hands, maybe they need a budget cut.

I realize this is not a "speed trap", but it sure sounds like police entrapment. I've heard that in Forest Park, the local police have had a plainclothes policeman standing along Madison Avenue, and when he sees a car coming he steps out into one of the crosswalks. If the car fails to stop for the "pedestrian", the driver is given a citation.

My sister sent me this story that I thought you might enjoy:

A mature (over 40) lady gets pulled over for speeding...

Woman: Is there a problem, Officer?

Officer: Ma'am, you were speeding.

Woman: Oh, I see.

Officer: Can I see your license please?

Woman: I'd give it to you but I don't have one.

Officer: Don't have one?

Woman: Lost it, 4 years ago for drunk driving.

Officer: I see...Can I see your vehicle registration papers please.

Woman: I can't do that.

Officer: Why not?

Woman: I stole this car.

Officer: Stole it?

Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner.

Officer: You what?

Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see.

The Officer looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

Officer 2: Ma'am, could you step out of your vehicle please! The woman steps out of her vehicle...

Woman: Is there a problem sir?

Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner.

Woman: Murdered the owner?

Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car?

The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

Officer 2: Is this your car, ma'am?

Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers.

The officer is quite stunned.

Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license.

The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer.

The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.

Officer 2: Thank you ma'am, one of my officers told me you didn't have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner.

Woman: Bet the liar told you I was speeding, too.

frj,

I have tried that little trick on my lovely wife when she continuosly asks me to do something that is much less important (in my mind) than what is on tv at the current time.... She does not appreciate it, and that little antic cost me dearly (Even after explaining that I was only joking...).

9C1 - "A TV remote can, in some circumstances, look like a weapon"

But a car with LEDs on the front that transmit outside human visual range doesn't under ANY conditions.

FRJ: Unlike the policeman I would assume your family members are not armed. A TV remote can, in some circumstances, look like a weapon and put a policeman in fear for his/her safety.
Do I need to spell it out more clearly?

BTW: FRJ if you family sits around the living room armed I would appreciate knowing about that in the next few weeks. Just curious, you know. :D

Minn. Teen Arrested For Shining Laser At Chopper

"Immediately the cockpit lit up and the windscreen got opaque with a green light. We looked right away to the left and saw where the laser was coming from," said Englin (a Minnesota State Patrol pilot).

Trying to blind someone piloting a hundred or more people is dangerous, but transmitting something totally invisible to people isn't.

This morning I saw a Cook County Sheriff getting back into his car after writing a ticket. He immediately turned on his mars lights and stomped on the gas, passing several people before pulling over someone else. I don't think his door was shut for over 30 seconds. It was essentially impossible for him to get an accurate speed on any car before he pulled over the second car to write up a ticket. I really don't think that they care if anyone was speeding. Tickets are about revenue, not safety, after all.

Radar jammers can be banned because of FCC regulations, but laser jammers are immune to such, as it is not illegal to transmit light. But, of course, governments rarely consider legality when passing laws.

Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan allow the use of them in Canada...

I take back my previous statement though...jammers ARE illegal in IL.

Laser jammers and radar jammers are illegal in the states of Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.

jman the "some states" in which radar detectors are illegal in passenger cars are Washington DC and Virginia. They are also illegal to use on military instalations and illegal to have in Canada. Commercial vehicles are another matter.

Until lately the cops typically didn't like the lidar units. With radar, they can set their unit to the speed that they want it to go off at, say 70 mph, and they can go to sleep until the unit goes off. Then they look around and pick the most likely car.

With lidar, they have to actively aim the unit at the front plate or a headlight, and then hold it there for a few seconds as the car moves down the road. It's aggravating to use compared to a radar unit.

However, they seem to be making some that are easier to use now. The next thing for us, of course, is jammers. It is completely legal to broadcast light of the right frequency to confuse lidar units. It doesn't need to be a laser, it just has to be the right color (infrared) and be bright enough and pulsing to prevent the laser from hearing the reflected signal. A TV remote control would work if it was a lot brighter. Fortunately, infrared diodes of high brightness are getting quite cheap...
