Hey there

When my truck is cold and I start it you can hear the engine knocking until the oil starts flowing and it warms up for a minute. I have taken it to several reapir shops. some say piston slap, some say it's the lifters Like I originally thought.

I have tried different weights of oil from 5W30, 10W30 to 15W40. The last one seems to quiet the noise the best but it is still there.

Any Ideas??? Thank you for your input.

I had a ford that had piston slap, used full synthetic oil. After that it would only knock if it sat for several days.

It is piston slap. The piston skirts are too small for the cylinder bore. I had one and GM would not do anything about it, so I traded it off. I ran full synthetic oil and Lucas synthetic oil stabilizer. That helped it some, but still sounded bad when cold.
