i am a gm mechanic.....for now. if it has the 4.3L engine. it most likely (99%) is the intake gasket, but dont rule out the water pump. if you have a small mirror, look under the water pump for signs of seepage. also look near the back of the engine near the distributor (intake leak).

97 5.7L leaked coolant from the aluminum connector at the heater hose to block junction at 48,000 miles. Took a while to find. Repl;ace the dex with prestone green and have had no problem since, now at 113,000 miles.

oh yeah i forgot...when u replace, use ONLY the metal shim gaskets...if you use OEM you'll do it again. Fel-Pro was contracted to make those gaskets....the metal was the original design, but GM cheaped it out...the rest is history

Replace you intake gaskets before it starts leaking into the oil....because then you get to replace your lifters too.....YAY!!! if it gets bad enought your oil will look like mud and you'll get to put an engine in it.

If you have a 4.3L engine in your Sonoma,it is the intake manifold gasket.

Dex cool is a pain but if your car comes with it don't try to be cheap and put the green stuff it will get expensive. Use the almond type of tablets they do help. Also if your metal hoses start to leak your better of replacing them with rubber hoses they last just as long and are far cheaper.

I had several manifold gasket leaks. The quick fix was for the dealer to put more of the "GM Cooling System tablets" in the coolant. The sealer has ground almond shells as the main ingredient. I flushed and cleaned the system a few times, noting the gelatinous masses that came out. Closest description is elephant snot. I put regular Prestone in and haven't had any trouble yet in the last year and a half.

Dex cool is made for the modern GM motor. The old green stuff will cause problems. If you don't believe me just try it!!!! Then you will see the engine eaten out from the inside. I looked up the info on mycarstats & they are talking about sludge build up & corrosion. This is common for people who do not service their vehicles on a regular basis. Come on people get a grip and service as needed.

Leak is coming from lower intake gaskets. Plastic gasket with a printed rubber seal in the gasket. Once the plastic cracks there is nothing left to hold the seal in place. Upper and lower gaskets with a coolant flush, t stat, lube oil filter will run in the $750 range. With a complete tune up, plugs wires, cap and rotor, fuel, air and PCV will run about $960. That is aftermarket price with ACDelco tune up parts and gaskets from General Motors. Do not forget to replace the coolant fitting before it breaks off. It also includes a full system flush and standard green style coolant used.

Take it in to a GM dealer. Or you may be looking at big $$$ to fix. Dexxa Cool is the problem. It eats your engine from the inside out. I had coolant mixed with engine oil leaking from the front of my vehicle. Have your radiator flushed completely and go back to the old green stuff. GM service departments have to use Dexxa cool. Go to someplace like Kaufman tire. It will cost about $150 (total flush 3X to remove all the old stuff). Check out www.mycarstats.com for more info. There is a class action lawsuit building. It's a real eye opener. The end result if left unresolved is a blown engine. Good luck.
