Sears don't know what LOF stands for on their shop order either. Lube/Oil/Filter...not going back.

You don't think Sears stands to profit from an alternator sale, do you? Get OUT!
Seriously, If not a Honda dealer, go to an independent shop that specializes in Honda.

Hi guys,
I am glad to tell you that my alternator is still OK after about 2.5 months from Sears telling me to replace it. Now it works very well, and I am planning to get warranty for my battery bought from Sears 2.5 months ago. Joke--Do you all think I should aks for some compensation for one busy day checking it back and forth and worrying the alternator for about two months?

qxzhang: I recently had to change my alternator on my Accord. First when performing a hard acceleration all the indicators on my dash lit up. This indicated that the alternator wasn't putting out enough power to the spark plugs. But before that I had a hard time starting the car. I did the battery test, started the car and then removing the battery positive cable, the car ran for a few seconds then died. This is the second alternator in 38 years of driving that I had to replace and that simple test was the revealing factor. Hope this helps.

Thanks very much, ZZZoop! My symptoms is a little wierd! the workers in Tuffy checked the alternator and the voltage is 13.6 V, they told me it is good! But the workers in Sears checked it for two times and found the alternator is bad, because the voltage is 12.7 V. So they can't give me a warranty on my new battery buying from them. At last, they told they believe dealer's result and we got a agreement. If we drive it for more than one month and the battery is good, they will give me the warranty and believe alternator is good. (the dealer's inspection of alternator is expensive, about $100).Now it passed about three weeks, battery is good. what about your opinion? I think I shouldn't choose Sears to change my old battery, they checked it and said it is low in power charging less than 15 mins, I remembered. Also, I spent one day to check the alternator fromhere to there. It is not a fair trade for me!

qxz, What are the symptoms that make you believe that your Civic needs a new alternator? The most obvious indication would be your charging system light being illuminated on your instrument panel. Even then, that can be an indication of many other problems besides a failed or failing alternator.
One of the easiest ways to check for a failed or failing alternator is to compare the voltage across your battery terminals with your engine off and engine running. With the engine off, your voltage should be approximately 12 volts. With the engine running, the voltage should be approximately 14 volts.
btw, you should never disconnect the battery while the engine is running.
