Last week in a call with analysts, BP CEO Bob Dudley said 2011 will be "a year of consolidation for BP", saying the new year will be a time for the company "to get back on its feet." As part of this consolidation, BP plans to sell ARCO and several refineries.

Many motorists west of the Rockies have known ARCO for quality fuel and their cash only approach, which the discount chain is proud of. According to GasBuddy numbers, ARCO has over 1,300 branded stations in five states- California, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, and Washington.

While BP plans to sell ARCO branded stations and stores, they will retain rights in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. According to news reports, BP will lease back the rights to stations...

sugarbabyTN frets:

'Bp is trying to get rich quick on the American People'

Actually, ARCO, BP's brand here in California sells gas for less than virtually all of the others. Their departure is likely to raise prices here, not lower them.

I guess China will buy it. A friend of mine in the state department, just back for Egypt, informed me that China won all three bids of the three largest oil reservoirs in southern Iraq and are building three military bases associated with each. Just great.

Too many regulations to even expand existing, aging refineries. We need to build new refineries and update our old ones.

Too bad they can't spin it off. We need more refinery companies and retailers to enhance competition.

ARCO (Atlantic Richfield) has been out of PA for quite a few years. Used to use Atlantic exclusively "back in the day".

With every gas station sale, BP is throwing in a plastic model of an oil drenched bird and a large sponge for easy clean ups.

I agree Jarod13, and being on the left coast ARCO has been a great benifit with its lower prices. My hats off to BP, they always find a way to mess thing up.

TheSnowStorm -- you might be onto something...and it ain't pretty. We consumers will once again be the one's paying the bulk of any price increases, all to the greedy oil companies, refineries and the oil traders. But this is nothing new for us is it, since we've then the patsies for years and years!
