It's a fact that many know about ethanol- it contains less energy than conventional gasoline, and results in lower fuel efficiency. Some states have moved towards "hiding" ethanol content in gasoline, so how does your state stack up?

Fifteen states do not require labeling gasoline that contains ethanol, so if you live in a state not listed below, be sure to check your gas pump to see if there's ethanol present!
The fifteen states that don't require stations to tell you if the gasoline contains ethanol: (alphabetically) California, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Ohio.

What is amazing to me is that...

Since both gasoline's hydrocarbon components and ethanol are solvents; without a gas chromatograph how do we separate the smell of one solvent from the others. (sniffing the unknown in qual O chem may have affected my smelling ability)

YES.

Bought some gas in a small town on I-45. Noticed it smelled funny. Realized then there was no ethanol sticker on the pump. The "no alcohol" gas had more of a solvent smell to it.

A free market should exist for the consumer to buy ethanol or not. I would pay a little more for non ethanol gas, but living in NC I have to check the gas myself.

You can buy a handy alcohol check kit from EAA,

/homebuilders_kits.aspx

This will tell you how much ethanol is in the gas, easy to use.

Handy info to have; just no methanol nor isopropanol; I haven't developed the ability to remediate those into urine yet.

What's the big deal? If all the states can require labeling on how many calories are in a Big Mac...I'm sure they can do the same on what percentage of ethanol is in gasoline.

OK- apparently if you go to the blog directly, you can't edit, you can't link, and you have to sign in (and sometimes you show up as somebody else)-- but coming in through another portal brings it all back. Weird.

So here are the links I tried to post:

Fuel Testers (#1)

ACE (#2)

Couple of other links for actually finding the good stuff:

Pure Gas

Buy Real Gas

-- and of course keep your fellow members advised in local discussion forums.

Hm. Apparently we can't edit messages here either? What gives? So my links were truncated on the beginning by the message board software, and I can't even fix it. Anyone interested is just going to have to PM me. Sheesh.

Excellent points. I live in a state that valiantly protects us citizens from the horrors of consumer info, but I've asked around and found where the e-free is. Some are helpful enough to put signs out directly stating "no ethanol in our gas".

PD, I'm wondering where your info comes from. Everything I've seen indicates that California DOES require a label, for what it's worth. This includes this resource: [/state_guide_ethanol_laws.html] and this one: [/pdf/contentmgmt/ACE120_Status_07_web-1.pdf] (page 10).

{Why can't we put links in here??}

Not required in Tennessee; there a few places here in Nashville that advertise the fact that their fuel contains no ethanol on their price signboards.

I've used E85 from Meijer in a flex fuel car; the mileage was down a tad; but the price was better then than now. Probably all balances out in the end. Seems a little harder or slower to fire up; but spring will soon be here

If I had to revert to sneaking that trash into your car I wouldn't want to tell you either. I got some unknowingly one time and could tell the difference. To a great deal of people that is okay. My car which is a '08 was not altered to run that trash and I have avoided it by filling up at the state line before going into Nevada and if I have to put in fuel there it is just enough to get me back out.

This issue has angered me for a longgggg time in Illinois. Gas pumps have NOT been clearly labeled. I am in one of the top corn producing counties in the country. The Ag lobby is strong here. MOST pumps have a sticker on the side of the pump or up near the top where it is not readily visible that says "All grades of gasoline MAY contain UP TO 10% ethanol". The Ag lobby has the Illinois bar association in their hip pockets on this one. Poor/false advertising of products allowed by law. It is nearly impossible to purchase 100% gasoline in our area anymore. I used to try to do the math on fuel efficiency and the price difference between 100% gas and 10% ethanol to decide which product gave me more "energy" for my dollar. I finally caved in and gave up on that years ago.

I don't know if labeling is required by law in Ca., but I have never seen a station that doesn't have a label saying their gas contains up to 10% ethanol. Since it is required by law that all of our gasoline must contain 10% I'm not sure why we should require a label.

I was wondering why MI stations removed ethanol content stickers in the last few years. It is almost a fraud.

I guess so since my state is at the top of the list. I had wandered about this in the past. I notice some stations do list this but most do not but just indicate some special blend of additives that are supposed to keep your engine clean. I suspect ethanol is one of these and of course stealing power and making your engine less efficient...

Don't really know why they do in Illinois, it is not an option here. We are forced to purchase the low grade additive! Everywhere!
Bring on the alternative fuel vehicles so we can get away from this garbage!
