Hodgkins PD has a new hiding place on LaGrange Rd. They face oncoming traffic while sitting in the "Y" of the Northbound entrance ramp to Northbound I-55!

I noticed 4 police vehicles this afternoon on 159th St. between Harlem and 108th Ave. After all, Sunday is Orland P.D.'s favorite day to rob from the rich and rob from the poor...

I just saw a Wooddale cop on Thorndale just west of IL-83 in one of their favorite hiding places.

I've seen those "dummy" cruisers, CA_Jones. Other popular locations for them are under the overpass at IL-120 SB (Belvidere Road) and at Wolf Road NB.
I'm guessing that they don't do it in the city because they'd come back to find the cruiser stripped.

On I-294 the State Police have been known to park retired cruisers 'manned' by dummies loosely dressed as state troopers at strategic but obvious locations. One of these locations was beneath the O'hare Oasis on the southbound side. Some joker put a Dunkin' Donuts box on the roof of the cruiser.

Speed traps in Arizona are not done by the AZ Highway Patrol. They have a plethora of photo enforcement cameras all along the highway... I'll tell ya, no one was going over 65 on the stretch i was on...

This morning on I-294 NB just south of 137 there was a state trooper by the turn around. He was really well hidden, blending in with things quite well.

I-294 remains a hotbed of activity. Though I did see some strange behavior from a state trooper until I noticed that he had a flat tire.

The state troopers were certainly out yesterday on I-294 and I-55. No Dodge Hemis, though, just Fords, marked and unmarked.

Orland Park P.D. had their squad car on 108th Ave. in Crystal Springs today to catch people when they pick up speed going down the hill.

Orland Hills police have been busy lately on 159th St. They've been parking their Dodge Charger in the center of the road just over the hill east of 91st Ave. trying to catch people unaware.

Estimates OK for speeding tickets, Ohio Supreme Court rules
I guess they can throw out all of the police radar guns in Ohio. As long as a policeman says you were speeding - you're guilty. No need for something silly like.....actual proof of speeding. I guess in Ohio when it comes to speeding you're guilty of speeding until or unless you can somehow prove your innocence.

There's a significant difference, deachgo. Sometimes the speed limit is too high and you can obey the law and yet be wildly irresponsible, and there are other times where the law is what is irresponsible. Given your profession, I can understand you not thinking much about the latter, but it does happen, and surprisingly often. Hopefully not intentionally.

You can drive responsibly and still get ticketed in areas where the speed limit is intentionally set too low in order to raise revenue.

Traveled south on I57 both ways today and only saw one state trooper at about 6:45 am. Luckily there weren't any on the way home.

Be careful if you go to Milwaukee, frontrowjoe33. They actually build speed traps into the roads up there. Nice, concrete pads for the police cars just where you can't easily see them as you come over a rise in the road that doesn't need to be there. They also have cameras that cover the entire interstate network in Milwaukee county. Not just occasionally, but everywhere. Big Brother is watching you in Wisconsin...

frj, you should suggest to our Il. state legislature. Put speed cams on all the major construction zones and put minimum speed limit signs up! That way they could get speeders in non-rush hour, and get everyone to pay in rush hour when traffic is stop and go.... Illinois would have a surplus in no time...

I have been seeing a funny one. Just west of I-90 and IL-53 there's a building where the tollbooth used to be that was apparently given to the state police to use as an office/rest area. There are patrol cars parked there all the time. Lately one of the "parked" cars has a cop with an active radar unit in it. It's surprisingly effective.

Trooper Layoffs A prelude to Chicago covering the expressways again?
•The Illinois State Police will lay off more than 460 troopers and close five regional headquarters by this fall, acting State Police director Jonathon Monken said Tuesday.
With expected retirements, the layoffs will reduce the number of sworn state troopers by about 600, or 30 percent, Monken said. The force currently has a little over 2,000 troopers.
The five offices are those in Litchfield, Carmi, Pecatonica, Macomb and Des Plaines. State Police have 22 offices now.
“There will be significant consequences to public safety,” Monken warned.

The state police activity on interstates recently has all been Crown Vics. I haven't seen ANY of those Impalas.
I could definitely see a police version of the new Taurus, though. It's big, fast, and reasonably fuel efficient. The seating position is much higher than previous Tauruses, too, giving a better view of the road. It'd make a great police car.
With Ford's fancy Sync dashboard these days, I wonder if they could put custom software in the computer in the dashboard and add voice controls for lights, siren, 2-way radio, and even plate lookups. That'd certainly remove a lot of clutter from the front seat. They could even add police only features to the GPS like those center turnarounds on the interstates, giving voice directions for quickest way to the other side of the interstate.
Full Disclosure: I was a consultant to Federal Signal Corp. and worked on adding internet connections to police cars.

Ford debuts new Taurus Interceptor to replace classic Crown Victoria
Ford's current Crown Victoria Police Interceptor goes out of production at the end of 2011; the new PI model picks up production immediately thereafter and should be arriving on the mean streets in early 2012.

A favorite speed trap of the Itasca Cops (where they were this morning) is on Thorndale just east of I-290. They have a guy with a Dodge Hemi who watches for both people headed east on the Elgin-O'Hare who haven't realized that the speed limit has just dropped, and people who run the light on the exit from I-290, which is nearly always piled up.
This morning I also saw a state trooper on IL-83 just south of Foster SB with a truck pulled over. It's unusual to see the state police there, so I'm curious.

Another favorite of the Wooddale cops is IL-83 at the railroad bridge/Irving Park. It's 6 lanes wide and 45 mph but everyone does 55-65 and the cop hides out in the apartment complex parking lot. By the time you can see him it's too late.

Yes, lsharpshooter, Wooddale almost always has a local cop watching Irving Park Road just west of IL-83 and east of the railroad tracks. It's rare when there ISN'T a cop there.

The state troopers have been busy on interstates lately. On I-290 between IL-83 and I-355 there's a center turnaround that has concrete barriers blocking your view of any car there when you're headed eastbound, and that used to be a very busy place for the police. It seems to be getting popular again. I saw a state trooper there last night, very well disguised. He didn't seem to care about cars going less than 70, or the car next to me would have been pulled over.

Yesterday afternoon I was driving on I-290 in Elmhurst where the was a state trooper writing up a ticket. Yesterday evening I was on the ramp from I-355 to I-289 eastbound doing 25 in traffic in the snow when I realized that I had state troopers both in front of me and behind me, with another one 3 cars up. I got a bit paranoid until the end of the ramp when it became obvious that there was a big car-semi collision on westbound I-290 and they were just trying to get to it.

The tri-state where the construction is finishing up is covered with state police. I think that they are taking advantage of the fact that when a road that has been 2-3 lanes of constuction road is now 5 lanes of new roadway, people tend to go fast just because they finally can.
